MBM Consultancy was approached by a client who needed to load four 160-ton reels on the hatches of a vessel, with a “Last-In-First-Out” option. However, the client was concerned about the cost and time required to use steel HEBs, stevedores, welding, and extra time in the loading and discharge port. Additionally, the vessel had a very low “tons per meter squared” hatch-cover strength combined with a very small footprint, making it a challenging task.
The client needed assistance loading reels on a vessel, more specifically on the hatches. This required expertise in optimizing cargo placement for maximum strength and safety. MBM Consultancy addressed these concerns by locating the cargo in a manner that would result in obtaining the maximum strength from the hatches using the available main transversals and potential transfer of load through the longitudinal (where necessary) to minor transversals without hindering any safety factors. We presented three potential locations within just a few hours.
However, Locating the fourth reel presented a challenge due to the risk of overloading the transverse members. We conducted an in-depth analysis to determine the force flows and ensure the material strength and cargo safety. The analysis resulted in a satisfactory solution that maintained safety margins.
All four reels were able to be stowed without indicating any risk of failure to any main Transversal or Longitudinal. This allowed the client to present a workable solution to their own client. Resulting in a “Last-In-First-Out” scenario with very little work and at a reduced cost.
The four footprints of the reels are shown on the vessel GA CAD image, and we were able to optimize the loading of these reels without the need for weight-spreading. This resulted in reduced loading time and costs, as well as a safer and more efficient loading process.
In summary, MBM Consultancy was able to find the perfect location for loading 4x160t reels on a vessel. Thus, optimizing the loading process while reducing costs and time. By conducting an in-depth analysis, we were able to achieve a safe and efficient loading process that satisfied the client’s needs.
This project outlines MBM’s ethics –
WIN –> WIN –> WIN
When our client’s client WINs – this means our client WINs – which means overall we all WIN.
