Raising Tweendecks

When transporting cargo, it’s not uncommon for the cargo’s height to require raising tween decks. However, in order to ensure overall functionality and operational practicality, it’s important to analyze and design new structures that can withstand the actual forces at play and ensure a safe working structure.

To achieve this, the forces caused by vessel motions are calculated from predetermined stowage conditions, and the dimensions of the structural members are determined based on these forces. For this particular project, we added a 79 cm steel block to renew the existing horse head. The horse head is a structural member that supports the tween deck and helps distribute the load.

Once the renewed horse head was modeled in the software using proper mesh and material types, forces obtained from motion analysis were applied to the renewed horse head’s surfaces, which were subjected to these forces. The horse head was located in a box that represents the real configuration of the horse head in a vessel hold.

After running a static Finite Element Analysis, stress values, distribution, and displacements were obtained. Assessment of the results showed that the renewed structure is safe to carry the load required for the transportation of the cargo.
